A little bit of Montaperto's history
Montaperto, at an altitude of 279m, is a small village 7km form Agrigento. It is inextricably linked to medieval Tuscan history through the Uberti and Montaperto families.
The Tuscan feudal estate of "Feudo di San Lorenzo" was owned by Giovanni of the Uberti family, and eventually ceded to Luigi Montaperto, whose grandson Pietro Montaperto founded the scenic Sicilian village on the hills outside Girgenti (Agrigento's ancient name) in 1565. In turn, Pietro's great grandson, Nicolo' became the first Marquis of Montaperto in 1608. The town retained the title of Marquisate under the power of the progenies of the Montaperto family until 1812, the year in which the granting of feudal rights was abolished. While it now forms a suburb of Agrigento, the hills have retained their history and are dotted with ancient olive trees and charming, rustic properties. Up in the village you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Mediterranean sea and the surrounding countryside.
